Oliver Mayer is the author of over 30 plays, including The Dragon Tree -- upcoming at the Wallis Annenberg Center for the Performing Arts. Other plays include Members Only (the sequel to his groundbreaking Blade to the Heat), Yerma in the Desert and Blood Match (both inspired by the plays by Federico Garcia Lorca), The Sinner of Toledo (adapted from a short story by Chekhov), Fortune is a Woman, The Wallowa Project, Dias y Flores, Dark Matters, Conjunto, Young Valiant, Joy of the Desolate, Laws of Sympathy, Joe Louis Blues and Ragged Time. As an opera librettist, his 3 Paderewskis (composed by Jenni Brandon and winner of the 2019 American Prize) received its world premiere at The Kennedy Center, and has been performed internationally in Poznan, Poland. Other opera and sung pieces include America Tropical with composer David Conte, as well as a new opera with Jenni Brandon entitled L'Amour Fou. He is also a published poet, children's book author and essayist. Mayer is full professor with tenure, as well as Associate Dean of Faculty and Associate Dean of Strategic Initiatives at USC's School of Dramatic Arts. He is the winner of several awards including the USC Associates Award for Excellence in Teaching and a Mellon Award for Mentoring.

Oliver Mayer was born in Hollywood, California and grew up in Studio City. As a teenager, before discovering writing, he was a boxer. He is a graduate of Cornell and Columbia Universities, and attended Worcester College, Oxford. For eight formative years, Oliver was on the artistic staff of the Mark Taper Forum, where he and Oskar Eustis created The Mentor Playwrights Project, and where he worked on The New Works Festival, bringing life to such plays as Angels in America, The Waiting Room, The Kentucky Cycle, and his own Blade to the Heat. Since leaving the Taper, he has written full-time and has taught writing at UC Riverside, Art Center College of Design, and (since 2003) the University of Southern California. He is married to actress Marlene Forte.
